Try Something New

Welcome to day 5 of the 5 for 10 Fruit and Veggie challenge.
Stop by a supermarket and select one or two fruits or vegetables that you’ve never heard of or tried before. When you stop and look through the produce section carefully, you’ll be surprised by how many varieties you’ve overlooked in the past.
Here are some ideas for yummy but often-overlooked things to try:
- Jicama: A tuber with a crisp, crunchy texture can be peeled and eaten raw or cooked. According to the USDA, jicama is full of fiber and phytonutrients, plant-based chemicals that have strong antioxidant powers. Make jicama chips.
- Papaya: A sweet, fleshy tropical fruit packed with vitamin C. Once you learn how to cut the fruit, you can try recipes like this Indian-inspired Papaya Chicken.
- Watermelon radish: These nutritious root vegetables (also called red daikon) have a milder, sweeter taste than traditional radishes. They’re full of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Slice them up for this Watermelon Radish and Goat Cheese Salad.
