Our food should be nutritious and safe to eat, right? Sadly, that’s not always the case. More than 10,000 chemicals are allowed in food sold within the U.S.
Buying organic can help you avoid some added chemicals (like pesticides) that are often found in produce. Organic foods are grown in soil that hasn’t contained prohibited substances for at least three years prior to harvest.
So, how do you know which foods to buy organic? Every year, the Environmental Working Group publishes the Dirty Dozen™ EWG's 2022 Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce™. It lists the top 12 fruits and vegetables that are exposed to pesticides — the ones you should always buy organic. In 2022, those include:
- Strawberries
- Spinach
- Kale, collard, and mustard greens
- Nectarines
- Apples
- Grapes
- Bell and hot peppers
Certain foods are more resistant to chemicals, so you don’t need to buy organic for everything. One example is avocados — the thick skin acts as a protective coating against pesticides. A simple rule of thumb is to choose organic for thin-skinned produce — or fruits and vegetables that you eat whole — which are more susceptible to harmful chemicals.
