Choose Plant-based Dairy - Eat Clean, Go Green challenge, powered by Compass One Healthcare - Day 8 Tip
Published
It’s not just meat production that hurts our planet — dairy production does, too. The environmental impact of dairy milk compared to plant-based milk is substantial. It produces 3 times as much greenhouse gas emissions and uses:
- About 10 times as much land
- 2-20 times as much freshwater
Every person can improve the environment by drinking and eating less dairy. Switching to plant-based dairy products can lower your carbon footprint. Today, grocery stores are flooded with plant-based milk alternatives, including:
- Soy
- Oat
- Almond
- Rice
- Coconut
Keep in mind the health impacts of plant-based dairy. These products usually offer calcium, vitamin D, B12, and protein without the high saturated fat content you would find in regular dairy. But sometimes plant-based dairy contains more sugar, so check labels carefully and consume in moderation.
Not sure how to go without other dairy products like yogurt and cheese? Consider these ideas:
- Cashew cheese is completely dairy free
- Almond milk ricotta is a cheese made from dairy-free almond milk
- Many stores sell non-dairy ice cream
- Almond milk yogurt is a tasty replacement for traditional yogurt
If switching to plant-based dairy sounds too difficult, try it with one food item, like milk or yogurt. See how it goes and replace more items over time.
