Buy Less, Freeze More - Eat Clean, Go Green challenge, powered by Compass One Healthcare - Day 9 Tip
Published
Did you know, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), 20% of meat is thrown away? Yet meat production is a huge strain on our environment. The group also predicts that by 2050, one-third of U.S. emissions will come from greenhouse gases released during meat and dairy production.
If we were all less wasteful, we could significantly reduce the impact of meat production on Earth. Today’s challenge is to buy less meat and freeze unused portions to use later.
If you find that you’re often throwing away a serving or two of food, cook less. If that’s not an option, don’t throw away unused food — put it in a sealable container and freeze it for later. The FDA says uncooked cuts of meat will still be good if frozen for 4 to 12 months. And freezing any type of leftover foods to use later is more environmentally-friendly than throwing it away.
This is also an easy way to have meat ready to go for future meals. Simply grab the meat from the freezer and reheat. Think of it as quicker prep time and less cooking while helping to improve the environment.
