Do some active housework this week

Published

Who has time to exercise when you’ve got a full workday plus a mile-long to-do list at home?

We understand the struggle is real when it comes to housework. Just when you’ve got one area of your home clean, another one needs attention. Think of these demands as opportunities to incorporate more heart-pounding activity into your routine. It’s got to get done, so you might as well make it benefit your heart!

Consider housework on your list that requires active movement. It could be:
  • Sweeping, vacuuming, or mopping the floors or stairs
  • Shoveling snow
  • Scrubbing the showers, bathtubs, doors, or cabinets
  • Washing the exterior or cleaning the interior of your vehicle
  • Washing windows
  • Cleaning out gutters

Since housework and yardwork require lots of bending, lifting, and general movement, you can count them as moderate forms of exercise. Make the most of them by picking up the pace, which increases exercise intensity. If you have the time, aim for about 30 minutes of housework and 30 minutes of exercise — even if it’s broken up throughout the day.
