Adopt A Bird’s Eye View

Published
When you’re in an airplane looking down, the buildings, trees, lakes, and even mountains look small. The same is true for difficult situations. When you’re face-to-face with stress, it’s intimidating, and you may wonder how you’ll make it through. But when you step back and look at the situation from afar, it might not seem so challenging after all.

To get through stressful situations with more ease, change your perspective. Practice adopting a bird’s eye view of the big and the small things. The next time you’re challenged by a negative emotion or a difficult hurdle, consider the bigger picture by pondering these questions:
  • Will the outcome of this situation matter in a week? A month? A year?
  • What’s the worst thing that could result from this, and how would I get through it?
  • When I look back at this moment 5 years from now, what will I think? How will I feel?

The answers to these questions help to give you more of a big-picture perspective. The more space you give yourself, the more the negative emotions that come along with stress will decrease. Challenges will always be there, but if you look at them this way, they’ll feel more manageable.
