Take Inventory - Upcycle Your Pantry challenge, powered by Compass One Healthcare - Day 1 Tip

Welcome to day 1 of the Upcycle Your Pantry challenge, powered by Compass One Healthcare.

Before you can leverage the nutritious food in your pantry, you need to know what you have. Once you know what hidden treasures lie within your pantry, you can make the most of what you already have.

Follow these steps:
  1. Clear the shelves: Begin by clearing off your pantry shelves one at a time. This is how you uncover those hidden items you may have forgotten about.
  2. Sort by categories: Group similar items together. For instance, gather all your canned goods in one area, your dried grains in another, and your sauces in a separate space.
  3. Check expiration dates: Take note of the expiration dates. Set aside any items whose expiration dates are approaching soon. Throw away goods that have already expired.
  4. Label and date items in your pantry and fridge: To use leftovers before they expire and help reduce food waste, always write the purchase date on them or the date you prepared them.
  5. Note the quantity: Make a list of how much of each item remains in your pantry. This helps you gauge the amount you have on hand for when you cook.
  6. Consider meal ideas: As you take stock of what you have, brainstorm meal ideas in your mind. Think about your favorite dishes as well as new ones you’ve been hoping to try.

For any items that are almost expired, now is the time to use them. For example, instead of letting muffins go to waste, break them up and use them in muffin bread pudding. Another example is combining various containers of nuts from your pantry, toasting them, and using them in salads, granola, ice cream, and more.

Today is the perfect opportunity to put your organizational skills to good use and make the next 9 days as successful as possible. Once you know what’s in your pantry, you’re ready to whip up nutritious meals using ingredients you already have.
