Start With Self-Reflection - Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation - Embracing Allyship Challenge - Day 1

Published

We all have unconscious (or implicit) bias. It’s something you might not realize you live with, but you do. Hidden deep within us, we have attitudes or stereotypes that unconsciously affect how we view things, act, and make decisions.

These biases usually come from our backgrounds, experiences, and cultural environments. And despite our best efforts, implicit bias can affect how we view and treat others, leading to unintentional discrimination or exclusion.

Before we get too far into this Embracing Allyship Challenge, let’s better understand how unconscious bias can cloud our judgment and keep us from becoming allies. It might cause us to overlook the experiences and perspectives of marginalized groups. We could even perpetuate harmful stereotypes without realizing it.

By acknowledging your unconscious biases, you can become more mindful and intentional in your actions as an ally.

Reflect on how unconscious bias might show up in your thoughts and behaviors. Consider these questions:

  1. Think about a time when you made a decision or formed an opinion about someone without consciously thinking about it. What factors might have influenced your judgment?
  2. Think about the diversity within your social circle, workplace, or community. Do you notice any patterns or trends? Do you tend to gravitate toward people who are like you?
  3. Consider the media you consume and the messages it sends about different groups of people. How might these portrayals shape your attitudes and perceptions?
  4. Think about your reactions to recent events or conversations related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Were there any moments that made you feel uncomfortable or defensive? What underlying biases may have contributed to those reactions?

This reflection is hard, but it's needed. Now, you've laid the foundation for more meaningful and impactful allyship.
