Assess Your Allyship - Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation - Embracing Allyship Challenge - Day 5

Published

You’re halfway through the Embracing Allyship Challenge, and you’re doing great. Now, let’s take stock: How much of an ally are you?

Allyship is a never-ending commitment. Measure where you are today by using this self-assessment tool [PDF] from the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing.

Follow these steps to help you persevere in your efforts to advocate for yourself and your colleagues.

  1. Find a comfortable, quiet place to take the self-assessment.
  2. As you answer the questions, be honest and open-minded. Consider how your answers align with your values and goals as an ally.
  3. When you finish the self-assessment, review your results. Pick out areas for growth and improvement. Be proud of your strengths and accomplishments (you’ve come a long way!), but also acknowledge where you can do better.
  4. Come up with a plan for expanding your allyship growth. Set specific goals for yourself and how you support others.

Now that you’ve used the allyship self-assessment tool, you have a baseline. Come back to it later to see even more growth. And remember: We’re all a work in progress!
