As a nurse, advocating for others comes naturally. But what about advocating for yourself?  

 

When you’re busy marking off your to-do list each day, neglecting your own needs is inevitable. Over time, this can lead to increased stress and burnout. And that's why it's crucial to become your own champion. 

 

It takes time to strengthen self-advocacy, but it’s something we can all work on. Use today to prioritize yourself as your biggest advocate.  

 

Your Action for Today 

Work on these tactics to turn self-advocacy into a tool that protects you from burnout: 

  • Speak up: Addressing concerns and voicing your needs empowers you to create a healthier work environment. 

  • Set boundaries: Establishing clear boundaries protects your time and energy, preventing burnout from creeping in. 

  • Seek support: Don't hesitate to seek guidance from mentors or colleagues when facing challenges. Just like you did on Day 7, lean on your community. 

  • Invest in self-care: Integrating self-care practices into your routine helps you prioritize your mental and physical well-being. 

  • Combat racism: Take a stand against workplace discrimination and racism by fostering an inclusive environment that supports everyone. 

  • Take a stand: Consider getting involved in legislative and political advocacy, which are important ways to advance the profession of nursing. 

 

Remember, advocating for yourself isn't selfish — it's a vital step toward preserving your professional resilience.
