Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation - Beat the Burnout challenge sponsored by the American Nurses Foundation — Day 8 Tip — Move more to relieve stress, improve mood, & prevent burnout. Try these simple yet effective ways to get more movement into your daily schedule

Physical activity isn't only good for your body — it's also a powerful antidote to stress and burnout. Exercise releases endorphins, which are chemicals in your brain that act as natural painkillers and mood elevators. One study found that even a 10-minute walk can significantly improve mood.

Finding time for exercise during your busy workday may seem far-fetched, but it’s possible if you focus on small bouts of activity. Mini workout sessions can make a big difference in your stress levels and overall well-being.

Your Action for Today
Try any of these simple yet effective ways to get more movement into your daily schedule:
  • Stairs: Instead of waiting for the elevator, challenge yourself to take the stairs whenever possible. Even a few flights of stairs can get your heart pumping and your blood flowing.
  • A stroll outside: If you were already on your feet all day, you may not need more steps. But a stroll outside in the fresh air can do your body (and mind) some good, too.
  • Yoga: Strike a few poses to increase muscle tone, focus on your breath, and strengthen your spine — all while reducing anxiety and depression.
  • Quick workouts: Dedicate a few minutes of your break or lunchtime to a quick workout. Focus on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercises that maximize your time and energy, such as jumping jacks, squats, or lunges.
  • Desk exercises: Incorporate desk exercises into your workday to keep your body moving and relieve tension. Try simple stretches, leg lifts, or shoulder rolls between patient care or during breaks.

By finding creative ways to move your body throughout the day, you can effectively manage stress and prevent burnout. Even small steps toward increased activity can make a big impact on how you feel.
