Try Life Crafting

Published

It is day 5 of the FulFILL Your Cup challenge, powered by CeraVe.

Today’s exercise is all about reconnecting to your purpose. But what exactly does that mean?

Researchers say purpose is something that’s meaningful to you but is also socially valuable. Life crafting helps you make sense of your priorities in life. It helps you identify the values you personally care about AND those that allow you to contribute to your community.

This exercise may take time and extra contemplation, so feel free to break it up across multiple days. It’s OK if you can’t finish the task completely — even just starting the process has benefits. What’s important is that you do what you can.

Here’s how to do it:
  1. Write one list with your greatest values (what means the most to you), then a separate list of what you enjoy doing in life. Think about the qualities you admire in others and skills you’d like to build.
  2. Write a paragraph answering these questions: If you had no roadblocks, how would you like your personal life or career path to turn out? What does your ideal life look like?
  3. Write a paragraph describing how you’ll make this ideal life happen. What goals do you need to accomplish? What hurdles do you need to jump over to reach those goals?
  4. Share your plan with a loved one (family member, friend, or close coworker). It’s important to speak your goals out loud to someone else and hold yourself accountable.

Hopefully today’s exercise helped you renew your passions or see new possibilities that you couldn’t see before. And remember — if you can’t answer these questions now, think about them, bounce them off of a trusted friend or colleague, and come back to them when you’re ready.
