Affirm Important Values
Published
It is day 6 of the FulFILL Your Cup challenge, powered by CeraVe.
Do you often find yourself being defensive toward others? Maybe you recently got negative feedback at work, or you were excluded in a social situation — both examples are upsetting. When your self-image takes a hit, it helps to reflect on what matters.
Here’s a quick exercise from the Greater Good Science Center to re-center yourself and affirm your values. Which of these values, characteristics, and qualities are most important to you? Rank them in order from most important to least important (1-11).
- Artistic skills/aesthetic appreciation
- Athletics
- Business/managerial skills
- Creativity
- Musical ability/appreciation
- Physical attractiveness
- Relations with friends/family
- Romantic values
- Sense of humor
- Social skills
- Spontaneity/living life in the moment
Write a paragraph explaining why your #1 value is most important to you. Does (or did) it play an important role in your life? Why?
Use this exercise as often as you need. Research shows that writing about your most important values can help decrease stress, expand open-mindedness, and improve your decision-making skills.
