Swap Water For Tea Water for Wellness challenge, powered by Compass One Healthcare - Day 5 Tip
Published
Tired of drinking plain water all day, every day? Swap out a few cups of water with tea. Not only is it mostly made of water; it comes in a variety of flavors.
Whether you prefer the delicate taste of green tea, the robustness of black tea, or the soothing qualities of herbal infusions, all are welcome. Tea is a great option for hydration, but it provides other health benefits, too. Because of the high antioxidant content, evidence shows that some teas may help your immune system, reduce inflammation, and even protect you from cancer and heart disease.
Herbal teas and certain varieties of green and black tea also contain electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium. Like the electrolytes in sports drinks, electrolytes in tea help to maintain the body's fluid balance and aid in hydration.
Keep in mind that some types contain caffeine, which has a mild diuretic effect, but herbal teas or caffeine-free varieties offer hydration benefits without any diuretic impact.
For more information, read our blog post about tea and hydration. You can also learn more about the benefits of antioxidants and other ways to add them into your diet in the article Boost Your Mood with Food, in the July 2023 issue of American Nurse Journal.
