Do Something Social - Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation - Find Your Balance challenge - Day 9

How can being more social help to improve your work-life balance?

Cultivating human connection isn't just about having a good time — it's a powerful tool for boosting your overall well-being. Research shows the positive impact of social interactions on mental health, stress reduction, and life satisfaction. For example, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that people with stronger social bonds have a 50% lower mortality risk than those who have fewer social connections.

Today's goal is to add more human connection into your day. At work, schedule a coffee break or a lunch outing with colleagues to boost comradery. You could also join a workplace club or group activity to deepen your bonds beyond the professional realm.

Extend your social engagement outside of work by connecting with friends or family members. Plan fun gatherings, like a movie or game night, which give you a break from work-related stressors. You could also:
  • Find a workout buddy or join a fitness class: Exercising together not only promotes physical well-being but also provides an opportunity for social interaction.
  • Join a book club: Engage with literature while connecting with others who share similar interests.
  • Explore local volunteer opportunities with friends or family: Contributing to a shared cause not only makes a positive impact on the community but also strengthens your social bonds.
  • Attend a worship or community event: A worship service, block party, or local festival can be just the ticket to lift your spirits and meet new people.
  • Plan an outing or getaway with a friend: Concentrated time away from your routine and sharing space with a dear friend can rejuvenate your spirit, even if only for a few hours.

As you integrate more socialization into your routine, it will eventually become a sustainable part of your work-life balance strategy. Try to make this a priority today and every day moving forward.
