Speak up for fairness - Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation - Embracing Allyship Challenge - Day 4

Published

Silence is acceptance. When people see unfair treatment or bias happening at work but don't speak up, it makes those unfair actions seem OK. This silence creates an environment where discriminatory practices can thrive, further marginalizing and disadvantaging certain groups of people.

When we stand by and allow discrimination, bias, or racism to happen, injustice grows. Silence subtly condones those behaviors. So, while it may not feel like you're doing anything wrong, staying quiet helps exclusion and injustice flourish.

Speak out against discrimination and bias by following these steps:

  1. Take notice of any interactions and behaviors that show discrimination or bias.
  2. If you see an act of discrimination or bias, take a deep breath and gather your thoughts before responding.
  3. Call out the behavior by speaking assertively yet respectfully.
  4. Use "I" statements, which help you focus on the behavior's effect rather than making accusations.
  5. Offer empathetic support to the person who was targeted. Let them see you as an ally.
  6. Follow up through the specific channels in your organization. Use proper reporting mechanisms or grievance procedures.

Choose the road less traveled — choose to speak up. Your voice is vital in creating a workplace culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
