At work, you have a massive to-do list. All you can think about is checking off a task and moving on to the next. But true allyship means focusing less on the task and more on the people.

One way to do this is through active listening — which means you fully concentrate on, understand, respond to, and remember what's being said. Instead of focusing on what you’ll say back, just think about what the person is saying to you.

Listening is a skill that takes intentionality and practice. Use these tips to become a more active listener:
 

1. Give your full attention: When someone is talking, resist the urge to multitask or mentally prepare your response. Instead, focus solely on what they're saying.
2. Make eye contact: Eye contact conveys respect and shows that you're engaged in the conversation. It helps build trust and connection.
3. Avoid interrupting: Allow the person to express themselves fully without interruption. Interrupting can derail their train of thought and make them feel unheard.
4. Validate their experiences: Show empathy and understanding by acknowledging their feelings and experiences. Sum up what you've heard to ensure you understand correctly.
5. Offer support: Let the person know you're there for them, whether they need advice or just someone to listen.
